Presentation: "The Puritans and Preaching" After examining the primacy of preaching in Puritan thinking, Dr. Beeke will look at Westminster's advice on preaching, followed by the homiletical structure of Puritan preaching, and how the Puritans targeted different types of hearers. Then, he will summarize a variety of characteristics in Puritan preaching, such as its scriptural foundation, theological emphases, Christ-centered accent, clarity and logicalness, and experiential (applicatory and discriminatory) uses. He will conclude with the need for the Puritan preacher to be a Spirit-anointed and godly man himself.
Dr. Joel R. Beeke is president and professor of systematic theology and homiletics at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary (1994), pastor of the Heritage Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Grand Rapids, MI (1986), editor of Banner of Sovereign Grace Truth (1994), editorial director of Reformation Heritage Books (1994), president of Inheritance Publishers (1986), and vice-president of the Dutch Reformed Translation Society (1995). He is a graduate of Thomas Edison College (B.A.), Netherlands Reformed Theological School (M.Div. equiv., 1978), and Westminster Theological Seminary (Ph.D., 1988). He has written or edited fifty books including Meet the Puritans (Reformation Heritage Books, 2006), The Epistles of John (Evangelical Press, 2006), Walking as He Walked (Bryntirion Press/Reformation Heritage Books, 2007), Striving Against Satan (Bryntirion Press, 2006), and Reformation Heroes (Reformation Heritage Books, 2007); and contributed fifteen hundred articles to Reformed books, journals, periodicals, and encyclopedias. He is frequently called upon to lecture at seminaries and to speak at Reformed conferences around the world. He and his wife Mary have been blessed with three children: Calvin, Esther, and Lydia. |
